Itinerary

Day 1 - London and Oslo

We depart from London Heathrow on our flight* to Oslo. After checking into our hotel, we take a guided tour, visiting the National Theatre, Norway's main arena for theatre productions and stage artists for more than 100 years, the Storting parliament, and the modern Opera House situated beside the city's waterfront.

We also take a stroll through Vigeland Sculpture Park that feature 212 life-sized human sculptures of Gustav Vigeland. The rest of your day is then at leisure. Perhaps visit the Viking Planet Museum which resurrects the era of the Vikings with VR-technology or the Munch Museum that has the largest collection of Edvard Munch's paintings.

Royal Palace
Days 2-3 - Bergen

Today, we travel by coach to Bergen, a harbour-based city surrounded by 7 mountains. We check into our hotel on arrival, the Scandic Neptun in the heart of the city.

On Day 3 we take a tour, visiting the delightful Bryggen waterfront, the city's old Hanseatic trading wharf and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This historic quarter, with its charming timber houses, is the oldest part of Bergen - with some buildings dating back to the 15th century. Afterwards, we walk to the Fløibanen station where the Fløibanen Funicular takes us to the top of Fløyen Mountain, (1,050 feet above sea level). Here we admire superb views over the city as well as get the chance to meet Oslo's resident goat population.

The rest of the afternoon is at leisure, and you can visit one of the city's many galleries and museums. Bergen's Art Gallery exhibits a vast collection of works by local Norwegian artists, including many pieces by Edvard Munch, best known for his famous expressionist painting 'The Scream'. Meanwhile, the city's Science Museum provides a fascinating insight into industry and research in the area.

Day 4 - Flåm

We cross Norway's incredible fjordland region today, travelling through some of the country's most breathtaking landscapes on some of the most scenic train journeys in Scandinavia. The Bergen Railway takes us 'across the roof of Norway', and is northern Europe's highest altitude line. We change trains at Myrdal, an isolated mountain station, for our journey aboard the Flåm Railway which takes us 12 miles from Myrdal to the foot of the fjord, via a multitude of twists and turns. We cross the mighty Kjossfossen Waterfall that plummets to a depth of more than 700 feet. During summer gallons of water come gushing down the valley, while in winter the entire length is frozen, making it look like a cascading glacier. A small power station is located at the here and generates power for our train.

At the end of the journey we reach Aurlandsfjord, where the village of Flåm is nestled. We check into our hotel, the Fretheim Flåm, for 2 nights.

Day 5 - Flåm and a fjord cruise

Today, we board a boat for a cruise across Aurlandsfjord, a 10.5-mile branch of the world's second longest fjord, Sognefjord. Together with Nærøyfjord, Aurlandsfjord paints a stunning picture, its cerulean waters snaking past rugged cliffs and sprawling pastures. The mountains surrounding the fjords are more than 4,500 feet high in some places.

We sail north, pausing at Gudvangen for lunch. This tiny and scenic village sits at the end of Nærøyfjord, where the Nærøydalselvi River joins the fjord. The village itself has only about 120 residents, and the waterway is famous for its salmon population. It is said that Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany cruised on its waters in his private yacht. Later, we return to Flåm by coach. The rest of the day is free to explore Flåm at leisure; you may wish to visit the local railway museum, complete with a full, miniature scale replica of the old lines that once cut through this rugged area. Perhaps enjoy a pint or 2 at the Viking-themed Aegir Pub, whose building is inspired by Norse mythology.

Arriving into the Norwegian capital, we walk to our hotel restaurant, the Egon Byporten, for a 3-course farewell dinner.

Leisurely pace of all tours was good for older people didn’t feel rushed. Guides and Tour manager were excellent. We had a problem with smell in one of the hotels and tour manager sorted us another better room. The fiord cruise was a bit of a let down we were squeezed onto a small car ferry with lots of others and the weather not being good there was not enough shelter for everybody. Other than that it was a good holiday. (Switzerland was better as we like old trains)

It was a good trip and I was glad to have a tour guide along to help with the train arrivals and departures. The Thon hotels left something to be desired. The tub in the 1st and the food in the 2nd.

The tour was interesting but we felt that the tour group was rather standoffish with those who came from Gatwick not mixing with ties who camped from Man

Organisation and help from all the staff and tour guide was very good, but the itinerary could have been improved in terms of times of journeys
