Ascending to Grindelwald First in the sky gondola is a delight, affording some wonderful panoramas of the magnificent Alpine mountainscape. Admire views across the sharp, snowy peaks, swathes of forests, and minuscule resort villages. We enjoy free time to breathe in the fresh mountain air at the summit and soak up the spectacular scenery before returning to Grindelwald.

On Day 4, you are free in Grindelwald, a village filled with quintessential Swiss charm; traditional wooden chalets, bars which play live music on an evening, and a host of excellent cafés to relax in.

Day 5 - The Jungfrau Railway

We enjoy a highlight of our holiday today, as we travel on the Jungfrau Railway to Jungfraujoch - Europe's highest station. We join the train in Grindelwald, where we're met by our expert guide for the day, travelling to Kleine Scheidegg to join the remarkable Jungfrau Express. Climbing from Kleine Scheidegg, we travel in distinctive red and yellow carriages through a tunnel carved out of the Eiger Mountain. We pause at the halfway station where our guide gives a fascinating talk about the history and construction of the line. Finally, we arrive at the 'Top of Europe', Jungfraujoch, over 11,000 feet above sea level. With free time, you could explore the Ice Palace with its many ice sculptures, or simply soak up the views. From the Sphinx Observatory terrace, you can enjoy 360 degree views of the eternal winter wonderland, made up of endless frosty peaks and the vast, ancient Aletsch Glacier.

Day 6 - The Schynige Platte Railway

We travel by cog railway (Standard Class) through pretty Alpine meadows on the way to Schynige Platte*. We travel to the peak in restored 19th-century carriages hauled by a vintage electric locomotive, hugging the mountain as we cross bridges and wind through tunnels. At the summit, you have time to explore the Alpine Botanical Garden, an explosion of colour home to around 600 plant species. Or, simply relax and drink in scenery of snow-capped peaks framed by a blue sky, from the café terrace.

*Due to seasonal operation, May departures enjoy a day trip to Lucerne.

Includes
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7 - Interlaken and Brienz

Our first destination today is picturesque Interlaken, a charming town on the shores of two crystalline lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The town is surrounded by stunning landscapes combining towering mountains, and endless forests. A historic town at heart, highlights here include a medieval monastery and castle, and a beautiful old town hall square, the Stadthausplatz. Leaving Interlaken, we continue past Lake Brienz to the small town that shares it name with the body of water. The cosy village is our starting point for our ascent of the Brienz Rothorn mountain by rail* (Standard Class), climbing over 5,000 feet to the summit of the mountain, offering fabulous views over the deep-blue lakes below.

*On May departures, we ascend halfway up the mountain to Planalp.

An absolutely brilliant holiday and I would do it all over again, a fantastic time from start to finish

The holiday was very enjoyable, lovely based hotel for getting around. The travelling was well organised although the three hours spent before boarding the Eurostar home was too long, perhaps an earlier train would have been better. We would have liked more information regarding the number of changes from one train to another which would have been helpful and had we known would certainly have sent our luggage on ahead.

Excellent hotels and itinerary. Organisation from Head Office very good (coping with French strike necessitating changes) and first class tour manager.
